Crooked House Pastels
In an attempt to satisfy my need for immediate gratification, as well as, a dare to produce ‘something’ with lots of color: I grabbed my pastels, conte crayons, black gesso, paintbrushes and unleashed my 'non dominate' brain using my left hand.
I figured, if I was so controlled with my right hand when I cut out my mat board reliefs, then I should be able to relax my style when drawing with my left hand. Sounded plausible. I could only do gesture drawings in college with my left hand in order to create the desired effect. I was to tight and controlled using my right hand to produce anything other then pain!
And so it began...training my self to use my right side of my brain to create fun, bright, vibrant drawings which are quite the contrast to my older works.
I start off with a paintbrush, an idea and black gesso. These are free form and unsketched. I then fill in the shapes with pastels, smudging, blending and mixing colors. When all the color has been applied I will go over the gesso lines with conte to produce the simmering, rich black that is seen in my work.
